Daughters of the American Revolution tea will honor student winners
Mary Tyler Chapter of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will have its George Washington Tea on Feb. 12 at Willow Brook Country Club.

The tea honors winners of the American History and the Christopher Columbus History Essay contests and DAR Good Citizen Award recipients in Smith County, the announcement said.

The winners of DAR’s American History Essay Contest for students in fifth through eighth grades are: fifth grade: Brayden Todd Bulman, Cain Elementary, Whitehouse, son of Brian and Ashley Bulman; sixth grade: Valerie Vierkant, home schooled, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Matthew Vierkant; seventh grade: no entries; eighth grade: Kathryn McKenzie Adams, Lindale Junior High, Lindale, daughter of Jeff and Julie Adams.

The essay topic was “Forgotten Patriots Who Supported The American Struggle For Independence.”

Caleb Vierkant, son of Dr. and Mrs. Matthew Vierkant, won the Christopher Columbus History Contest, open to high school students. He wrote on the faith and courage of Columbus.

The DAR Good Citizen Award is presented to high school seniors who are nominated by a classmate or a counselor. Recipients receive $100 and compete for scholarships as part of DAR-sponsored essay contests.

DAR Good Citizen Award recipients from Smith County are:

  • Bailey Barret, Grace Community School, Tyler, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Mark Barret;
  • Erin O’Quinn, John Tyler High School, Tyler, daughter of Melanie O’Quinn;
  • Kaylynn Grammier, Arp High School, daughter of Heath and Tina Grammier;
  • Justin Armstrong, Azleway Charter School, Tyler, son of Don and Kathy Foster
  • Hannah Sattler, Bishop T. K. Gorman Regional School, Tyler, daughter of John and Anita Sattler;
  • Emily Allen, The Brook Hill School, Bullard, daughter of Robert and Kimberly Tollett;
  • Cullen Hippler, Bullard High School, son of Curtis and Tabitha Hippler;
  • Evan Merritt, Chapel Hill High School, son of Dr. Brad and Janel Merritt;
  • Shannon Stewart, East Texas Christian Academy, Tyler, daughter of Kris Stewart;
  • Karalyn Williams, Lindale High School, daughter of Donny and Bobby Williams;
  • Benjamin Smart, Robert E. Lee High School, Tyler, son of Russell and Teresa Smart;
  • Andrew Kazlow, Whitehouse High School, son of Stuart and Jeri Kazlow;
  • Bethany Machiavello, Winona High School, daughter of Terri Machiavello.


Sheryl Brister and Beverly Wait, co-chairman of the event, will make presentations at the tea. Guests are invited to attend. The cost is $20.
