For nearly 17 years, Henrietta Grooms has spent countless hours volunteering with The Salvation Army of Tyler Women’s Auxiliary.
“I love and believe in the mission of The Salvation Army,” she said. “I feel really blessed to participate. ... (The Women’s Auxiliary) is the extended hands of The Salvation Army. Women have a lot of opportunities to volunteer.”
One of those opportunities is the upcoming 10th Annual Chili Bowl and Auction, which Mrs. Grooms is co-chairing with Phyllis Weiss.
The event will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 12 at Harvey Convention Center.
Former Sheriff J.B. Smith will again provide his own chili recipe, cultivated after his years of experience as a judge in the World Championship International Chili Cook-Off in Terlingua, according to the written release from the organization.
Ed King, manager of Chick-fil-A on South Broadway Avenue, will provide the company’s Chicken Noodle Soup for attendees looking for a non-spicy option.
Dessert will be provided by Jimmy Lynn of Dakota’s Steak and Chop House, and Marsha Swann of Distant Lands Coffee will serve coffee and tea.
Smith will also serve as the auctioneer for the event. Members of the Christian Cross Spoke Riders motorcycle group will assist with the auction. The live auction will feature a 2001 Dodge Ram truck, brown mink stroller jacket, water color painting by local artist Ed Williams of Woldert Canning Fire, walking cane with congressional seal, a state senate chair with seal, tickets to a Rangers game with parking pass, a Harry Dabbs combo riding/jumping English saddle, a $2,500 gift card from Brookshire Grocery Company, signed footballs from Heisman winners Johnny Manziel and Earl Campbell and much more.
The silent part of the auction will feature items such as gift certificates, homemade cakes, gift baskets and many items of clothing donated from local businesses.
There will be a Valentine cookie decorating contest featuring local celebrities. The cookies will also be auctioned to the highest bidders.
Country-gospel artist Old Guys Rule will provide musical entertainment.

The Women’s Auxiliary serves the community in many ways, Mrs. Grooms said. Several of the 450 members — one of the largest in the country — often participate in activities with residents at The Salvation Army’s William Booth Garden Apartments for low-income seniors. The group also facilitates the Angel Tree program during Christmas and organizes sales in the fall and spring to benefit the organization.
Last year’s Chili Bowl brought in more than $38,000.
The need for food and shelter is at an all-time high, according to a written release from the organization.
“I encourage more women to join,” Ms. Groom said. “We can always use more. I think anyone would be blessed as I have been.”
Tickets are available for the western-themed event for $10 and may be purchased from The Salvation Army office by calling Jennifer Jones at 903-592-4361
Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
