Man arrested after daylong standoff and will have mental health evaluation

A 62-year-old Cherokee County man is in jail awaiting a psychiatric evaluation after a daylong standoff.
Cherokee County Sheriff James Campbell said deputies were attempting to serve a mental health warrant at a residence on County Road 3212 at 8:30 a.m. Friday. Deputies entered the travel trailer the man was staying in but were met by the 62-year-old man holding a shotgun.
The deputies exited the trailer and attempted to talk the man into surrendering. He would not comply, Campbell said.
Campbell said the man fired seven shotgun rounds out the trailer’s windows and through the walls, roof and floor intermittently throughout the afternoon. Deputies, responding New Summerfield police officers and constables attempted to talk the man into exiting the trailer before tear gas canisters were used.
The sheriff said the man eventually asked for help around 3 p.m. as Texas Department of Public Safety Special Response Team members arrived. The man threw his weapon out of the trailer and was arrested.
