Recent History, February 1
What if the NRA took a page from recent history? Anyone who has had a cold knows nothing works better to clear your head than pseudoephedrine. Anyone who has bought pseudoephedrine in the past several years knows it’s not as easy as it used to be. As well as being a strong decongestant, pseudoephedrine is also the main ingredient in methamphetamine, a very nasty drug. To combat the rise in meth labs, our state and federal governments passed laws restricting the sale of this very benign drug when used correctly.

Pseudoephedrine is no longer available on store shelves. You have to purchase it from a pharmacist (no prescription required) who must see your ID and then record your name, address, date and time of sale and quantity sold.

As a law-abiding citizen who has never run a meth lab out of my home, this infringes on my right to stock-up on Sudafed when it’s on sale. However, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (lobby for OTC drugs) wasn’t too pleased with these laws either, but they preferred them to an outright ban of pseudoephedrine. So instead of launching multi-million dollar ad campaigns disparaging these politicians, they worked with them. And instead of ignoring the facts, they recognized that their drug could be very harmful if not used for its stated purpose.

Imagine if another powerful lobby group would act this way.
