Congressman visits Tyler on ‘town hall’ tour of East Texas
U.S. Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Dallas, visited Tyler Monday to talk to the media as he continued his “town hall” tour of East Texas.
The budget and dealing with the national debt and its relation to a stagnant economy were first on his mind. He said the economy is the looming concern on most East Texans’ mind.
Hensarling said residents are seeing the cost of daily life rise as fewer dollars are going in their pockets.
The greatest hurdle in the recovery Hensarling said is bringing fiscal sanity to Washington, D.C. He said some in Washington believe the government can tax and spend the nation out of its economic rut.

Hensarling said East Texans who balance their checkbooks know better.
“We can’t have government growing at 7 percent a year while the economy is growing 2 percent,” he said. “The math just doesn’t add up.”
Hensarling said America has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. He said Democrats must realize the need to address social safety nets, including Social Security and Medicaid that are not sustainable for future generations and prioritize spending as Main Street Americans do.
The congressman will be at the Henderson County Annex Meeting Room, 125 N Prairieville St. in Athens at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday as part of his town hall tour.
