Grace Community senior named bank's excellence award winner

Ashton Terry, a Grace Community School senior, has been named the American State Bank Academic Excellence Award winner for the third six weeks.
Miss Terry boasts a 4.0 GPA and a score of 29 on her ACT. A National Honor Society member, she is active in numerous on- and off-campus organizations, according to a news release.
Among her many extracurricular activities, Miss Terry participates in Cougarette Drill Team (member); Grace Student Government (vice president of community service); Acts of Grace Drama Company; and Company C Competition Dance Team.
Her community service includes volunteer work with Vacation Bible School, Sunday school, Walk a Mile for a Special Child, and Pine Cove Christian Camps.
She also has been involved with Hoops 4 Hope, an organization that raises funds for underprivileged African children, and Breckenridge Village of Tyler, which serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
She was accepted to The University of Texas at Austin and Kilgore College and is considering trying out for the Kilgore College Rangerettes, according to the news release.
Grace counselor Joshua Webb, who nominated Miss Terry for this award, said she is an asset to the school through her involvement.

“She is a person of high moral character that added to the environment of who Grace is and has become,” he said, according to the news release. “She is excellent in the classroom and the community and is always humble about her accomplishments. She is a great representative of our school.”
Tim Haugh, American State Bank's general manager of consumer finance, said Miss Terry is a wonderful example of the many East Texas students who work not only in the classroom, but the community as well.
“The Tyler area is better because of students like Ms. Terry, who love to give their time to make a difference,” Haugh said in the news release. “What a remarkable young lady.”
High school counselors at the eligible schools can nominate seniors at their school for this award.
They have one week after the end of the six-week period to submit nominations.
One recipient will be chosen from the nominations each six weeks.
At the end of the school year, American State Bank will have a banquet for the individual winners and will award one of them a $10,000 scholarship to the college or university of their choice.
