Some student housing left in the dark Sunday

Some Tyler Junior College students were forced to live in the dark Saturday as a result of a power outage at the main campus.
Some Tyler Junior College students were forced to live in the dark Saturday as a result of a power outage at the main campus.
The outage, which happened about 11:20 a.m., prompted officials to postpone the men's and women's basketball games and cancel an SAT exam.
About 20 students were evacuated from the Genecov Science Building because of smoke caused by the loss of power to electrical motors, TJC spokesman Fred Peters said.
Peters said students taking the SAT exam in Jenkins Hall were asked to leave because there wasn't sufficient lighting, and the exam was canceled.
The power outage involved a main power line near the intersection of Baxter Avenue and Lake Street and did not impact Hudnall and Bateman halls, both of which had full electrical power Saturday afternoon, according to a news release.
A group in Claridge Hall gathered in the dark lobby Saturday afternoon shortly before a scheduled emergency meeting. Peters estimated there's about 1,000 students living on campus at this point in the semester.
Men's and women's basketball games against Paris Junior College are rescheduled for 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men) today in Wagstaff Gym.
According to a news release, initial repairs were supposed to take until at least late Saturday night.
Peters said repairs will be temporary in nature, and the school is waiting for parts from out-of-town to make permanent repairs. He said the school hoped to have power restored late Saturday or early Sunday.
All scheduled classes and activities for Saturday were canceled, according to a news release.
Students in halls without power could move temporarily to Bateman and Hudnall halls, the news release states.
Traylon Williams, a 20-year-old freshman in Ornelas Residence Hall, said Saturday he was still trying to figure out living arrangements for that night.
“I just want the power on,” he said.
