After 26 years in business, Diane Bunker is moving her retail store Spin Out.

Construction on the two-story building began Labor Day weekend, and the store will open at 6277 Old Jacksonville Highway on Feb. 14.

Mrs. Bunker, 62, bought the land, in Swann’s Plaza, and is building her own two-story building. After 26 years of paying rent, she wanted to buy something and have equity, she said.

“It seems everything is moving out there,” Mrs. Bunker said of Old Jacksonville Highway. “It’s exciting.”

She said she will move out of her current 3,000-square-foot space at 117 E. Eighth St., in Bergfeld Center, by the end of February.

The new store will offer 4,000 square feet of retail space, two patios overlooking a small lake, with a bar and sitting area in the back of the store where people or organizations can hold meetings or small gatherings. With steel beams and concrete floors, Mrs. Bunker said they are going for an industrial, more modern look.

Mrs. Bunker said with the expanded space, she plans to add a few new lines of merchandise, including gifts, children and shoe lines.

Spin Out started as a “paint-your-own T-shirt” shop in Tyler. Mrs. Bunker opened the store in 1986 in the Times Square Shopping Center. Customers painted T-shirts, which then were put into a centrifugal force machine to spin out the paint, hence the name of the store. About eight years later, the company that manufactured the paint went out of business. Mrs. Bunker moved the store to Bergfeld Center about 16 years ago and started selling sports-themed shorts, T-shirts and children’s clothing.

Spin Out celebrated its 25th anniversary in November 2011.

The evolution of Spin Out through the years is due partly because of Mrs. Bunker’s two daughters. Sara Seeker, 35, and Donna Alfred, 33, each found their way back to Tyler after college to help their mother run the store.

Spin Out carries high-end brands, which mostly focus on younger, contemporary styles for women in their 20s and 30s. Mrs. Bunker said she respects the input of her young daughters, who help her select merchandise.

They offer such brands as True Religion, Hudson and J Brand jeans; clothing lines including Tory Burch, Joie, Trina Turk and Shoshanna. They also sell Jon Hart luggage and Vera Bradley, a variety of gift items and jewelry.

Mrs. Bunker, who grew up in Chicago, St. Louis, Houston and other towns as her father was transferred often for work, moved to Tyler in 1969. She taught homemaking at Chapel Hill High School and was preschool director at First Baptist Church. She left her career to be a stay-at-home mom before opening Spin Out.

Spin Out is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The store can be reached at 903-526-2226 or www.shop spinout.com.
