Wiley College students set to debate counterparts from Harvard University

Wiley College will debate Harvard University at 7 p.m. today in the college’s Julius S. Scott Sr. Chapel.
The public is invited to attend the debate. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
Wiley College in Marshall is the home of the Melvin B. Tolson/Denzel Washington Forensics Society.
Tolson coached the Wiley debate teams in 1929 and established a 10-year winning streak, according to the college’s website.
In addition to beating the larger black schools of the day, in 1935, he led the team to the national championship to defeat the University of Southern California before an audience of 1,100 people, according to the website.
“The Great Debaters” movie, which was released in 2007 and stars Denzel Washington as Tolson, chronicles the coach’s journey as he builds the team into a powerhouse.
The topic for today’s debate touches on the recent events related to gun violence at schools. It is, “Resolved: School adminis- trators should be trained and authorized to carry concealed firearms on school grounds.”
The debate is part of the three-day Ethical Student Leadership Conference. The annual event has attracted more than 300 student leaders representing colleges and universities from around the country since 2006, according to a college news release.
