MIDDAY UPDATE: Crane towers over Tyler; new 'Star Wars' director picked
CRANE TOWERS OVER TYLER
A 500-ton crane arrived downtown early this morning and will work around the clock throughout the weekend on The Peoples Petroleum Building. The crane arrived from Longview and will be taking off and replacing items on the 15-story building's roof, including a large water storage tank. Contractors have been working for months to restore the historic 1932 building after it's purchase last year.
STUNT PILOT PROMPTS FAA INVESITIGATION
A dramatic video of a stunt pilot buzzing a Texas runway, which has now prompted the FAA Investigation.
The pilot, identified as Jason Newburg, previously had an FAA waiver to do aerobatics at the airport, but the waiver expired in November. The video, shot January 16 at Lancaster Municipal Airport south of Dallas, shows the plane narrowly missing two people.

LOTTERY BAN PROPOSED ON WELFARE RECIPIENTS
North Carolina Lawmakers have proposed a ban on welfare recipients playing the lottery. The proposed ban would keep welfare recipients and people in bankruptcy from playing the lottery. The ban would effect more than 1.7 million people in North Carolina who currently use food stamps. Rep. Paul Stam had this to say “We're giving them welfare to help them live, and yet by selling them a ticket, we're taking away their money that is there to provide them the barest of necessities.” It's unclear how this ban would be implemented.
DIRECTOR CHOSEN FOR NEW 'STAR WARS' FILM
J.J. Abrams has reportedly been selected to direct the upcoming seventh installment of George Lucas' legendary "Star Wars" series. Abrams will work from a screenplay by Michael Arndt, who won an Oscar for writing "Little Miss Sunshine," but it remains to be seen whether the story will continue that of the original three films or tell an altogether new one.
