A.M. UPDATE: Dentist guilty of murder; North Korea warns of nuclear tests
NORTH KOREA WARNS OF NUCLEAR TESTS
North Korea warned Thursday that it will conduct its third nuclear test in defiance of the UN Security Council's expanded sanctions, making clear that its long-range rockets carry warheads aimed at striking the United States (Reuters). The threat came after a special U.S. envoy, warned North Korea against conducting nuclear tests. Meanwhile, China called on all relevant parties to "refrain from action" that might escalate the situation. Beijing backed Tuesday's Security Council resolution--a move that analysts said angered its northern neighbor.
JURY FINDS DENTIST GUILTY OF KILLING WIFE
A Smith County jury took an hour and 20 minutes Wednesday to find a retired Tyler dentist guilty of murdering his wife in June. Bobby Ray Nichols, 76, stood quietly, his face down, as the verdict was read. The punishment phase of his trial begins this morning in the Smith County 7th District Court. He faces up to 99 years or life in prison.
PEUGEOT INVENTS AIR-POWERED HYBRID CAR
French automaker Peugeot has invented a brand new air-powered hybrid. The 'Hybrid Air' system uses compressed air to move the car's wheels when driving under 43 mph. Peugeot says the new hybrid system should get up to 141 miles per gallon of gas. Models should roll out as early as 2016. Man, we hope it's not all a bunch of hot compressed air!
