Annual archeological conference set Feb. 9
The 20th East Texas Archeological Conference is set for Feb. 9, at the Ornelas Activity Center, 3402 Old Omen Road, Tyler, organizers announced.
F. Kent Reilly III, director of the Center For the Arts and Symbolism of Ancient America, in the Department of Anthropology at Texas State University, is scheduled to give the keynote address on “The Braden Style and Sacred Bundles: The function of Ideological Exchange in the Early Mississippian Period.”
The conference includes research presentations and books sales and is an opportunity for professional archeologists and archaeology enthusiasts to share a common interest in the region's cultural heritage.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door.

Applications for Azalea Belles sought
The Tyler Convention and Visitors Bureau is accepting applications from young women who want to serve as Azalea Belles.
Azalea Belles greet visitors to the Azalea & Spring Flower Trail held in late March and early April.
Girls interested in becoming a belle must be a freshman or sophomore in good academic standing; be home schooled or attend school in Smith County; and be able to commit to attending events during this time, said information from the Tyler Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The deadline to apply is Friday. Applications can be downloaded at the website, www.tylerazaleatrail.com or picked up at the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce, 315 N. Broadway Ave., Tyler.

Tyler police seeking burglary suspects
Tyler police were asking for help in finding two men who burglarized a home about 11 p.m. Friday.
The victim was in her living room when she heard a loud noise inside her house on the 500 block of Seagle Street, according to a police department news release.
She went to her bedroom and locked the door, but the burglars forced their way in and took her purse, wallet and money before leaving. The victim was not harmed.
The burglars were described as black males. One was tall and thin, wore a black ski mask and carried a black shotgun. The other was shorter, heavy set, wore a black ski mask and carried a black handgun.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Tyler Police Department.

Food Editor slated to speak at forum
Christine Gardner, food editor at the Tyler Paper, will be the guest speaker at the Tyler Woman's Forum this week, the organization announced.
The Forum meets at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday in the Woman's Building, 911 S. Broadway Ave.
Ms. Gardner has a degree in journalism and has worked in television sports news production. She studied at the Cordon Bleu culinary academy in Atlanta and then worked with a chef at a bed and breakfast in Sorrento, Italy.
After working briefly at FRESH by Brookshire's, Ms. Gardner was hired as food editor at the newspaper in 2011. She now shares her expertise and original recipes in the Food section in Wednesday's newspaper. She also is featured in the “Fresh Ideas” cooking segments carried on KYTX CBS19 television.
She also gives demonstrations at FRESH by Brookshire's.
