A man police say participated in the robbery of a convenience store Wednesday morning accidently shot himself while fleeing the scene.

Don Martin, Tyler police spokesman, said two men approached a clerk, who was outside smoking, at the Food Fast, 4201 University Blvd., shortly before 5 a.m.

The clerk told police the two men were dressed in all black with ski masks and armed with handguns.

“The suspects took the clerk inside the store and demanded cash from the register. A customer walked into the store during the robbery and was not harmed. The suspects fled on foot to the rear of the store when police were called,” Martin said.

Martin said as police were searching the area for the men they found one hiding in a wooded area behind the store. He had been shot in his lower right leg, and a gun was found, as was other evidence linking him to the robbery.

Martin said the suspect was identified as Jaqun Jamel Dawson, 17, of Dallas.

Dawson was taken to a local hospital and treated for his injury.

Lt. Rusty Jacks said Dawson's injuries required surgery, and as of Wednesday evening he remained in the hospital.

An arrest warrant for aggravated robbery was issued, and officers were scheduled to remain with Dawson until he could be taken to jail, Jacks said.

Martin said despite a perimeter being set up around the area they were unable to locate the other man after several hours of searching.

Anyone with information about the people involved in this crime is urged to contact the Tyler Police Department, at 903-531-1000, or Crimestoppers at 903-597-2833.
