Man receives 20 years for indecency with child

A Gladewater man was issued the maximum sentence in prison for two counts of indecency with a child for allegedly inappropriately touching a 5-year-old.
An Upshur County jury gave John Anthony Adams, 51, 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for each charge, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office. He will be eligible for parole in 10 years.
Judge Lauren Parish presided in the case.
In November 2011, Adams babysat the then 5-year-old victim and her younger brother, the release states. He was accused of inappropriately touching the girl during nap time.

The children’s mother picked them up and before the family left the driveway, the child allegedly told her mother that he touched her, the release states.
The girl described the experience to a forensic interviewer at the Children’s Advocacy Center a week and a half later, the release states. Adams declined to provide a statement to the sheriff’s office.
Adams is also wanted in Kentucky for bigamy and felony failure to appear charges, the release states.
“I am very proud and thankful for the sentence returned by the jury,” Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd said in the release. “Our citizens in Upshur County continue to deliver strong punishment for the jury box and again protected another child.”
