A.M. UPDATE: Notre Dame star in 'catfish' moment? Gun sales changes in Tyler?
HOAX OR CONNED: NOTRE DAME STAR IN ODD SPOT
In an odd story from the sporting world, Manti Te'o, Notre Dame's star linebacker, was at the center of one of the most inspirational stories of the 2012 college football season. He excelled on the field despite the deaths of his grandmother and his girlfriend, he said, within hours of each other. Te'o was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy and led Notre Dame to an unexpected berth in the Bowl Championship Series title game. On Wednesday, that story fell apart when the Web site Deadspin published an article saying that Te'o's girlfriend never existed. Notre Dame said in a statement Te'o was the victim of “what appears to be a hoax in which someone ... ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia.” Much remains unclear about whether Te'o was duped or whether he somehow perpetrated the fictitious story. Be prepared for this story to occupy a lot of airtime on sports-talk radio and ESPN.
