UT Tyler offering Kenyan study trip

The University of Texas at Tyler will offer a study abroad trip to Nairobi, Kenya, for the 2013 Summer II semester.
Led by Drs. Fletcher and Wycliffe Njororai, assistant and associate professors respectively in the Department of Health and Kinesiology, the UT Tyler Kenya Study Tour is open to all UT Tyler students.
It may be counted as either three undergraduate or graduate-equivalent level semester credit hours in Allied Health Science 4350 or as six undergraduate credit hours in Allied Health Science 4335 (Global Health), according to a UT Tyler news release.
This is UT Tyler's first travel/study trip to Africa and will take place July 13 to 26. The estimated cost of the trip is $3,660 and includes round-trip airfare, ground transportation, room and board and most meals. There is a $100 nonrefundable deposit.
The first information meeting will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 7 in Room 3055 of the Jean Lancaster Academic Wing in the UT Tyler Herrington Patriot Center.
While in Africa, students will visit various sites for study, including local and international health-related organizations such as Pathfinder International, Plan International, U.N.-Habitat, Nairobi Urban Health and Poverty Partnership Project. They also will participate in a safari.
Daily meetings will take place during the two weeks before leaving, so students can learn about Kenya and prepare for the trip. Students will register for the class as part of their normal load and submit certain work related to the course, according to a news release.
The course will be conducted in English, but students will have a chance to learn Swahili, Kenya's national language.
Limited scholarship and financial aid funds are available. A valid passport is required.
