The Tyler Police Department is looking for information on a person who stole a man's car and torched it in a car dealership's parking lot Sunday evening.

Tyler Police Sgt. Adam Tarrant said at 8:15 p.m. a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban was reported stolen from the Exxon gas station at 1516 S. Vine Ave. Tarrant said a young man left his keys in the seat of the car while inside the gas station and when he returned the vehicle was gone.

At 8:42 p.m., the Tyler Fire Department was called to a vehicle fire at Tyler Ford, at the intersection of Walton Road and South-Southwest Loop 323. The vehicle turned out to be the same one that was reported stolen from the gas station.

Police believe the car entered on the Walton Road entrance and was set on fire near the building, Tarrant said. The fire caused damage to the front ends of three trucks but did not damage the building, he said.

There are no suspects at this time, but investigators are hopeful there were surveillance cameras at the gas station.

The crime comes in two pieces, and the Tyler police Department will investigate the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle while the fire department will tackle the arson case, Tarrant said.

Anyone with information on the case can call the Tyler Police Department at 903-531-1000 or Tyler/Smith County Crime Stoppers at 903-597-CUFF (903-597-2833).

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and charges filed against the suspect in this or any felony case.
