Staff Reports

"Who's In Charge? -- How to Avoid Power Struggles with Children" is the topic for the Parent Services Center's annual parenting conference on Jan. 26.

The event, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will be at the Rose Heights Church Conference Center, 2120 Old Omen Road in Tyler.

Kelly Smith, a nationally recognized child behavior specialist, is the featured speaker.

Ms. Smith is a licensed psychological associate with a master's degree in clinical psychology. For 17 years, she has worked as a behavior specialist for Mesquite ISD.

She works with students, counselors, teachers and administrators in creating and implementing behavior techniques to help students learn to manage their own behaviors at school and at home, according to a news release about the event.

"Ms. Smith has 30 years experience working with children, teens and adults with behavioral issues," conference chairwoman Suzanne Brians said in a news release.

"In addition, she has recorded and co-authored works with the nationally known author and speaker, Dr. Ray Levy. She should provide valuable information for anyone who cares for children."

The conference is open to the public. Registration is $25 before Jan. 19. Proof of attendance will be provided for parents, foster parents and childcare providers, and continuing education credit is available for professional counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists and teachers. Lunch will be provided.

Parent Services Center is a nonprofit organization seeking to provide parents and those who work with children the educational opportunities, resources and support necessary to raise children who can become healthy, contributing members of society, according to the news release.

"Our programs are made possible through individual donations, grants and the generosity of corporate sponsors Southside Bank and At Home Healthcare," Executive Director Shelley Judd said, according to the news release. "We are grateful to all those who support the belief that families matter."
