Rain clouds darken East Texas skies
East Texas will be gloomy, dark and wet for most of the week, meteorologists said. John Adams, chief meteorologist with KYTX CBS 19, said a low pressure system moving across northern Mexico and South Texas is responsible for the steady rain on today and Thursday. The system was expected to drop between 3 and 5 inches of rain over most of East Texas, with isolated areas receiving more.
Adams said Wednesday promised a near 100 percent chance of rain, with areas around Interstate 20 and south in danger of potential severe thunderstorms.
A flash flood warning for all of Smith County was put into effect from 4 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Thursday, said Matt Hemingway, meteorologist with the National Weather Service — Shreveport.
“The rain we are getting will be mostly beneficial,” Hemingway said. “We are hoping it doesn’t come in too quickly to cause flooding concerns.”
Adams said the system was expected to bring unseasonable high temperatures for January, with Tuesday’s high in the mid 50s, Wednesday’s high in the low 60s and highs in the low 70s on Thursday.
The rain is expected to end Thursday morning, but another weather disturbance on the heels of the previous one will bring more rain Friday night through Sunday morning, Adams said. As of Tuesday afternoon, rainfall projections were not yet available for this storm.
Hemingway said the rainfall is a good start to 2013 after about three years of coming in below annual rainfall expectations.
Tyler ended 2012 with 34.72 inches of rainfall, 11.07 inches below the normal annual rainfall count of 45.79, according to data from the weather service.
The good news is 2012 fared much better than 2011, when the annual rainfall count came in at 24.97 inches, 20.82 inches below an average year.
“We are off to a good start this year, so we will see how it goes,” Hemingway said.
