Smith County Jail passes state inspection

Smith County Jail passed its most recent jail inspection by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, the county announced today.

During a surprise inspection on Dec. 18, commission representatives checked for cell cleanliness, secure lock systems, proper medical screening of prisoners, proper staff training, adequate shower and toilet facilities and sanitary food preparation within the jail system, the announcement said.
“We are very proud to receive such a positive report. These results are a clear indication of how former Sheriff J.B. Smith left the department,” County Judge Joel Baker said.
In a statement released by the county, Executive Director of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, Brandon Wood said “This achievement is a direct result of your office’s commitment to excellence and is an example of dedication and professionalism in maintaining a safe, secure and sanitary facility.”
Sheriff Larry Smith said he looked forward to working with the county to keep the jail in compliance.
Smith county jails hold about 700 inmates, the announcement said.
