City Council considering garage sale signage ordinance

Tyler residents hoping to direct potential customers to their garage sales may get some extra help if the city council approves an ordinance change about how signs can be displayed.

Council members are considering revising the ordinance to allow residents to display up to four off-premise directional signs on private property with permission from the property owners, according to a news release from the city. And residents are being encouraged to give their input about that issue on the city's website through the "Tyler Speaks" forum, a part of that city site.

"We are in the preliminary stages of this process and would really appreciate input from the community," City Planner Heather Nick said. "Feedback from our residents will help guide us as we move forward with considering a change."

To protect the city's natural beauty, signs may not be posted on light or traffic signal posts, sidewalks, fire hydrant or any other public properties or right-of-ways, the release stated.

The question about the garage sale signs is expected to remain on the city website for another week, Susan Guthrie, managing director of external relations, said on Monday.

"Tyler Speaks" is an online forum for civic engagement incorporated into the city of Tyler's website. Users may read what others are saying about important Tyler topics, and then post their own statements, according to the city's statement.

City officials will read the statements and incorporate them into their decision process. The first discussion topic -- off-site estate and garage sale signs -- has been posted, and residents may post their opinions on the page after registering.

The city currently does not allow off-premise advertising of estate and garage sales.
