Rusk police were looking for two men who assaulted and robbed two women on Sunday as they left a radio station where they had just hosted a Christian program.

The incident happened at 8:12 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Main Street in downtown Rusk, Lt. Jamie Campbell of the city's police department said.

The two women were leaving KWRW FM radio station for their vehicles when two men approached them, Campbell said.

The men, one with a handgun, tried to grab one of the women's purses, and the two women fought back, he said. The armed man hit one of the victims in the face and hands with the pistol, and the other woman was pushed to the ground. Both women suffered cuts and bruises, with one getting a black eye.

The bandits grabbed the purse and fled in the opposite directions, Campbell said.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Texas Department of Public Safety authorities joined in the search for the robbers, with the help of a helicopter from Longview, he said.

The robbers, both black, were described as slim to medium build, about 5-foot-7 inches tall and wearing dark pants. One of them wore a red-hooded sweater, while the other wore a black one.

Campbell said anyone with information on the robbers should call Crime Stoppers at 866-586-7878.
