MIDDAY UPDATE: new ETMC helicopters; beer for dogs
ETMC HAS NEW HELICOPTERS
The East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System unveiled today two new emergency transport helicopters, valued at more than $9 million, to provide patients in East Texas with critical, fast access to the region's only level 1 trauma center at ETMC Tyler.
The Eurocopter, EC135 P2+ helicopters will be stationed at ETMC Tyler and Titus Regional Medical Center in Mount Pleasant.
The EC135 that currently is stationed in Tyler is being upgraded and will be positioned at ETMC Athens.
This allows ETMC to provide high quality care and rapid transport to residents within a one hundred fifty-mile radius around each helicopter base, covering thirty-eight counties in East Texas.

TEXAS COMPTROLLER ESTIMATES REVENUE BOOST
The state comptroller estimates that Texas will generate $92.6 billion in general revenue in 2014 to 2015, a major jump in tax collection from the last two-year budget cycle.
Susan Combs released the estimate Monday, the day before the eighty-third Texas Legislature convenes.
She also reported eight point eight billion dollars in surplus revenue More than three point six billion dollars will automatically go into the Rainy Day Fund, so the Legislature has immediate control over how eighty-nine billion dollars can be spent.
That doesn't mean they will spend all of it.
Governor Rick Perry and Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst have promised to limit any increase in state spending to a sum of population growth plus inflation, or nine point eight five percent.

FEMALE DEATH ROW INMATE FACING EXECUTION
A female Texas death row inmate facing execution this month for the fatal stabbing and bludgeoning of a seventy-one-year-old woman has lost an appeal at the U.S. Supreme Court.
The high court, without comment, refused Monday to review the case of fifty-one-year-old Kimberly McCarthy.
McCarthy is set for lethal injection January twenty-ninth for the July 1997 killing of retired college professor Dorothy Booth during a robbery at the victim's home in Lancaster, about fifteen miles south of Dallas.
McCarthy is one of ten women on death row in Texas but the only one with an execution date.

BANK OF AMERICA TO SETTLE BAD LOANS
Bank of America says it will spend more than ten billion dollars to settle mortgage claims resulting from the housing meltdown.
Under the deal announced Monday, the bank will pay three point six billion dollars to Fannie Mae
and buy back six point seven five billion dollars in loans that the North Carolina-based bank and its Countrywide banking unit sold to the government agency.
That includes about thirty thousand loans.
Bank of America bought Countrywide Financial Corp. in July 2008, just before the financial crisis.
Countrywide was a giant in mortgage lending, but was also known for approving risky loans.

"BEER" FOR DOGS
An Oregon man who loves beer and loves his dog has concocted some hooch for the pooch.
Daniel Keeton works at Bend's Boneyard Brewery tasting room and calls his canine creation Dawg Grog.
There's no alcohol in the doggie brew.
Ingredients include vegetable broth and spent grain.
Keeton says his dog, Lola Jane, usually licks her bowl clean.
