Rusk police were looking today for two men who assaulted and robbed two women as they left a radio station, where they had just hosted a Christian program.

The incident occurred 8:12 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Main Street in downtown Rusk, said Lt. Jamie Campbell of the city’s police department.

The two women were leaving KWRW FM radio station for their vehicles when two men approached, Campbell said.

The men, one of them with a handgun, tried to grab a purse, and the two women fought back, he said. The armed man hit one of the victims in the face and hands with the pistol, and the other woman was pushed to the ground. The women suffered cuts and bruises, with one of them receiving a black eye.

The bandits grabbed the purse and fled in opposite directions, Campbell said.

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety authorities joined in the search for the robbers, with the help of a helicopter from Longview, he said.

The robbers, both black, were described as slim to medium build, around 5-foot-7 each, and wearing dark pants. One of them wore a red hooded sweater, while the other wore a black one.

Campbell said anyone with information on the robbers should call Crime Stoppers at 866-586-7878.

Robert Gonzalez, KWRW FM 97.7 vice president, said the women leased time at the station for a weekly Spanish religious program called “Lucas 418,” which has aired from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays for years.
