David Walton, executive director of Goodwill Industries of East Texas, says he wrote the following letter in response to seeing an increase in drop-off boxes for used goods in which the donations are used to stock the shelves of for-profit thrift stores.
“Regardless of how you choose to give, understand that your time and your used household items have value. Be sure you are donating to a reputable charity.
“Not all organizations that accept used goods donations have charitable missions. Some are purely and simply, for-profit thrift stores.
“By donating to Goodwill, you can be sure that you’re helping a true 501-c-3 charity. More than 85 cents out of every dollar that we receive from your tax-deductible donations goes to fund our mission activities. And that, in turn, helps build strong families and vibrant communities — communities filled with some of the more than 20,000 people we’ve served throughout 2012.
