Jail corporal arrested on assault charge
A jail corporal with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office was arrested on two felony counts, Sheriff Larry Smith announced Friday night.

Brandon J. Owens was arrested about 6 p.m. Friday on one count of aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, and one count of deadly conduct, a third-degree felony, according to a news release.

The warrants were issued earlier Friday afternoon by 241st State District Judge Jack Skeen, Jr., who set bond at $350,000 for the aggravated assault count and $150,000 for the deadly conduct.

According to a news release, the charges stem from about 1:30 a.m. Christmas Day.

The release states that the offenses occurred while Owens was off duty and are not related to his employment with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon receiving the information relating to this investigation and upon Smith’s oath of office at 12:03 a.m. on Tuesday, Owens was suspended. Owens was suspended at 7 a.m. on that same date upon arriving for duty at the Smith County Central Jail, according to a news release.
