Auto industry sees sales climb for third consecutive year

Not long ago, East Texan Charlotte Robins was driving a 2010 diesel truck.
"The fuel cost was extremely high, and it was hard to get in and out of," Robins said.
She said the $400 she spent every month on gas, convinced her to make a change. She bought a new car.
"I love my car, I bought a Rogue. The gas mileage is wonderful," Robins said.
She was one of many who flocked to automobile dealerships over the past year.
"It's a great time to be in the car industry, I'm telling you," said Jeff Nash, general manager of Peltier Nissan in Tyler.
He said that at his dealership, 2012 sales were up 18 percent over the year before.
"The credit market has opened up, the banks are lending the money, and incentives are better than they've ever been the past 3 years," Nash said.
Robins said an incentive for her to buy was that new models have improved fuel efficiency.
"Every make and model, not just Nissan, has done the exact same thing," Nash said, about improved fuel efficiency.
Research firm Polk predicts that auto sales for 2012 will hit $14.5 million, which would be the best sales year since 2007.
