Jacksonville police investigating potential threat
Jacksonville police responded to a potential threat earlier this week and have worked to get the sender the help they say he needs.
A message, sent by a 24-year-old Jacksonville man, stated that if things happen the way he thinks they will, “you’ll be seeing me on the news pretty soon and not the good kind.”
“With everything going on and the national media. …we just wanted to be proactive with this situation,” Detective Greg Compton said. “If it turns out to be nothing, so be it. We just wanted to do everything we could (and) wanted to make sure residents have factual information on what’s going on.”
Compton said police became involved on Thursday after a detective was contacted by an individual who was concerned about an email or text they received.
He said authorities located the man, who had traffic warrants, on Friday morning at his Jacksonville residence, but he didn’t acknowledge “any message he sent that would be alarming” and was told to come with Compton back to the police station.
Once at the station, he continued to deny that he sent the message, and when confronted with the actual text of this message, he still maintained he did not do anything, Compton said.
In an effort to be proactive, police contacted Anderson Cherokee Community Enrichment Services, where the man was screened and underwent a verbal evaluation.
As of Friday evening, Compton said ACCESS was working on a plan to “get his needs taken care of.”
“I hope it’s nothing, but I would hate to have been aware of something and not take some appropriate action,” he said. “We felt we did what was proper.”
