Recent letter mischaracterized NRA, ‘assault rifles’, December 28
The recent letter-writer who blamed the NRA for the Newtown shootings doesn’t have a clue about nature of the NRA or guns.

The NRA was started after the Civil War, to promote marksmanship and gun safety in the general public, and continues today to educate and promote rifle and pistol matches, and “responsible” and safe gun ownership. The so-called “assault weapon” is a figment of the liberal media’s imagination.

Those guns function just like any semi-automatic rifle. The only difference is that they “look” mean, being black, and having a pistol grip. The AR-15 is a term that is mis-applied to a large group of rifles. AR does not stand for “automatic rifle,” but Armalite, the company that designed the first of this type of rifle, the AR-10. Automatic rifles are strictly controlled, and you have to have a special permit, and pay a fee to own one.

Many feel the AR-15 is only designed for use by the military, and has no sporting purpose. Instead, it is used in many sporting rifle matches and contests throughout the United States, and in my experience it is the most accurate target rifle that I have ever shot.

I believe that the primary culprit in this shooting and other mass shootings lies with the media, and the movies, TV, and game manufacturers, in producing violent movies and games. They have so conditioned the children and young adults to violence with guns, that they think that it is simply a game to shoot someone.

The things that should be banned are these violent games, movies, and TV shows.
