Dispatchers with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department said the accident occurred at the intersection of Country Road 4418, outside the city limits of New Summerfield and close to the Rusk County Line.
Department of Public Safety trooper Tim Hatch said around 6 p.m. a westbound truck carrying a flat bed trailer stopped to make left onto Country Road 4418. Hatch said a truck pulling a small trailer failed to yield and struck the truck from behind.
He said the collision caused the long bed trailer to go into the eastbound lane of the highway. A vehicle traveling westbound struck the trailer and knocked across both lanes of traffic where another eastbound vehicle struck it.
Hatch said four people were taken by ambulance to a Jacksonville hospital and one was taken to Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler by ambulance. Their conditions were unknown as of press time. Hatch said a citation for failure to control speed was issued to the driver of the truck that rear-ended the flatbed.
