VIOLENCE, December 24
Regarding all the violence in society, I feel not letting a child have a cap gun and run around outside playing cowboys and Indians is mentally and physically unhealthy. Allowing them to sit around and play violent video games glorifying bloodshed and gore is even more unhealthy.
It’s not the so-called “gun culture” of America that’s creating all these massacres. If you watch the news and see the protests and celebrations in Middle Eastern countries, e.g., Egypt and Libya, everyone seems to own a rifle, and when they want to voice their hatred or love for some event, they all run out in the streets and fire their guns in the air. That’s a gun culture.
Ranting about gun control is not going to protect us from some deranged person intent on harming us. When I grew up (I’m 71) I’m sure I ate as much candy and drank as much carbonated drinks as kids do today and I was skinny. All my friends had cap guns and we were either invading Iwo Jima or saving our fort from Geronimo. Maybe we weren’t as knowledgeable as today’s youth, but we were certainly a lot healthier, physically and mentally.
