Woman loves food, companionship program delivers
Sitting in her wood-frame home on Old Noonday Road, 77-year-old Mary Porter wasted no time in saying how she felt about Meals On Wheels Ministry Inc., and the organization’s daily meals she receives.
“I’d fight anyone saying anything bad about Meals On Wheels, because they bring me some good meals every day, and I look forward to them,” she said.
The feisty woman spends most of her time in a wheelchair after suffering two breaks in her right leg, and the surgeries to repair them, which have left her unable to stand and cook.
But her misfortune is not getting the woman down. Instead, she enjoys life.
“My doctor told me to apply for meals, and I did,” she said. “The Meals On Wheels people are so nice, and they do more than bring meals. The man, who comes here, checks on me and talks to me. I look forward to him coming every day.”
Mrs. Porter said she has lived in the same home since she was 17, when she married her husband, P.W. Porter, who is now deceased.
“I moved in here with him, and I’ve been here ever since. There’s a lot of memories in this house,” she said.
The small home she shares with her son is full of things collected throughout the years, including one bedroom full of porcelain, Cabbage Patch, life-like and other types of dolls.
“Oh I collected them over the years, and some were given to me by some of the families who I watched their children for years,” she said.
“I’d fight anyone saying anything bad about Meals On Wheels, because they bring me some good meals every day, and I look forward to them,” she said.

Before the fall that injured her, Mrs. Porter said she would get in the kitchen and whip up a good meal, and her favorite was chicken and dressing.
“I miss it, but even though I’m in this chair most days, I still wish I could cook. Now my daughter is doing the holidays like Christmas, but Meals On Wheels is where I get my meals from now,” she said.
Laughing, the woman said she eats every bit of food on her plate and is appreciative of the service.
“I grew up in a time when food was sometimes scarce, so I am very thankful for this service. This is the best thing in Tyler, Texas,” she said with a twinkle in her eyes.
But food is not all gets from the agency. She said volunteers have brought her other necessities such as toiletries.
“The food is good, the people are good and they don’t throw food in the door when they get here. They actually care, and anyone who doesn’t like Meals On Wheels is crazy,” she said.
