Troup ISD Board names new superintendent

Troup ISD has a new superintendent.
Board members on Friday unanimously voted to hire Stuart Bird, who was named interim superintendent in August out of about 20 applicants.

Troup ISD has a new superintendent.
Board members on Friday unanimously voted to hire Stuart Bird, who was named interim superintendent in August out of about 20 applicants.
Bird was hired on a two and a half year contract, which will end in 2015. His salary was set at $115,000.
“I’m really excited about it,” he said by phone Friday afternoon. “It’s a good place. It’s a good school district. They’ve done a good job. They’re doing a good job. It’s just real special for a lot of people. … For me, it is a district I would like to have my grandchildren go to.”
He said he now believes his job, along with others there, is to keep it that way and improve where it can. He said he will wait until there is firm data from new standardized testing before the district makes any significant changes to instruction and hopes to increase the number of students who go on to college.

Bird graduated from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La. He taught in Sabine Parish for 10 years and then moved to Carthage. Bird served in Carthage as the school district’s band/fine arts director for 10 years and as principal at Carthage High School for 10 years.
His time in Jacksonville began in 2000 as principal of Jacksonville High School. He became superintendent of Jacksonville ISD in 2003 and announced his retirement in 2008.
“We’re just tickled to death to have Stuart there,” Board member Bill Lacy said. “Everybody thinks he’s going to do a great job. He’s a good fellow. … I think we did real good picking him.”
