Tyler Fire Department Asks Residents To Be Safe As Temperatures Fall, Some Power Outages Linger

Wednesday night's storms knocked out power to some Tyler homes, and with below-freezing temperatures expected Thursday night, the Tyler Fire Department is asking residents to be safe.
Wednesday night's storms knocked out power to some Tyler homes, and with below-freezing temperatures expected Thursday night, the Tyler Fire Department is asking residents to be safe.
High winds knocked out power homes in Tyler, and there may be some sporadic power outages scattered throughout the community, according to a news release from the department. Crews are working to restore electricity; however, it may not be restored before Friday.
Oncor spokesman Charles Hill said about 7 p.m. Thursday that about 9,000 of its customers are without power, and the company does not expect to fully restore electricity to all if its customers until Friday afternoon.
“It's hard to tell any particular customer when it will be back on,” Hill said. “It depends on what we find when we get there and how long it takes to repair it.”
Hill said Wednesday’s storms left about 3,000 customers in the Tyler area without power, including Jacksonville, Chandler, Bullard, Palestine, Whitehouse and Athens areas.
Another 6,000 are without electricity in the Lufkin and Nacogdoches areas.
Hill said workers are scattered throughout the company’s service area and are not concentrating their efforts in one specific area.
Temperatures are expected to dip into the 20s tonight, and the city of Tyler in encouraging residents to check on their elderly or disabled neighbors in the area, the release states.
Those without power should consider staying with friends and family until electricity is restored, the release states. For emergency sheltering assistance residents should contact the American Red Cross at 903-581-7981.
