Readers express horror at Newtown school shooting, December 19
I am sickened about the Connecticut shootings. I grieve for the families. I am thankful for our president’s heartfelt compassion for all of America.

I am taking action. I just joined the National Rifle Association, and I will apply for a Texas Concealed Carry license.

I will urge my legislators and local government and school authorities to enact an exception to Gun Free Zones to allow staff (only after screening and intensive training), to carry a handgun into the workplace, schools, hospitals, churches, theaters, sporting events, government buildings, colleges, cafeterias — whatever the local institution decides to do to protect their students or employees. I know this will seem simplistic to some, but it is a last resort and hopefully short term protection that can be implemented immediately while others try to figure out a better long term solution.

As our president stated, I agree that we must have a national and local discussion about how to provide immediate protection to our innocents.

I fear that is where my president and I will disagree.
