Van Zandt County manhunt results in arrest

A man was apprehended by Van Zandt County authorities on Monday after an extensive manhunt involving several agencies.

About 2 p.m. Monday, the Grand Saline Police Department and Van Zandt Sheriff’s Office assisted Precinct 1 Commissioner Mickey Henson in executing a warrant on County Road 1313, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Authorities received information that the wanted man was at the home in a Ford truck, according to the release.

When officers arrived, two men fled the scene, running southeast from the home and down a narrow wooded trail, the release states.

The two men drove the truck through the woods and over the fence and abandoned the vehicle with the doors open and the engine running. According to the release, the truck was reported stolen in Dallas.

One man allegedly made threats to kill law enforcement to keep from going back to prison recently and was considered armed and dangerous, the release states.

Two helicopters and a K9 unit were called to aid in the search.

Officers discovered one man was hiding in a barn near the scene and was requesting a ride. Several barns were searched in the area, but authorities could not locate him, the release states.

He allegedly had been receiving information on the police whereabouts by monitoring a police scanner, and officials used their radios to call off the search, the release states.

Investigators received information that the suspect was still searching for a ride and devised a plan to use one of his family member’s vehicles to lure him out of his hiding place, the release states.

As he came out, units rushed the vehicle, tased him and took him into custody.

He was booked into the Van Zandt County jail for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and the departments intend to add evading arrest charges, the release states. He had not been arraigned as of press time.

The other man has been identified but was still at large as of press time. The release states felony warrants will be issued for his arrest.
