Man Accused Of Trying To Drive Away With Student-Filled Bus Faces Additional Charges

The man accused of attempting to drive away with a school bus with children on board Tuesday morning in Palestine now faces additional charges.
The man accused of attempting to drive away with a school bus with children on board Tuesday morning in Palestine now faces additional charges.
Palestine police arrested 30-year-old Cedric Brenard Lewis and charged him with aggravated kidnapping after officials said he climbed aboard a school bus in the Timbercrest Apartments just before 8 a.m. and attempted to drive away.
Jailers with the Anderson County Jail confirmed additional charges were added to his original first-degree felony on Wednesday.
Lewis also was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a third degree felony; public intoxication, a class C misdemeanor; disrupting activities, public or private schools, a class B misdemeanor; resisting arrest, a class B misdemeanor; and criminal mischief, a class B misdemeanor.
He is also being held on several unpaid tickets out of Galveston and Houston counties.
His total bond is more than $1.5 million, jailers said.
A Palestine ISD official said previously that the man was pushing on the accelerator, but the bus was in park and did not move.
"The bus driver ran up and grabbed the man around the neck and began trying to pull him out of the seat," she said. "Several onlookers were watching, and they ran to help, and they finally got him off the bus, and someone sat on him until police arrived.
"We are just thankful no one was hurt."
