MIDDAY UPDATE: Bizarre incidents briefly affect two East Texas schools

WESTWOOD INCIDENT PUTS SCHOOL ON LOCKDOWN
A reported shooting touched off fears this morning and sent a school district into lockdown mode in Anderson County.

At a home where criminal activity is suspected, two individuals got into an argument and one fired a shot at the other, but did not hit him. The victim was then also bitten by a pit bull in the yard.

The suspected shooter left the area in a vehicle, but the dog bite victim ran from the area and wound up at Westwood Elementary School. Westwood Independent School District then locked down the schools.

As of eleven am, they were still on lockdown but were allowing parents to pick up their children if they wanted – and many have done so. Despite some conflicting media reports, at no time was there a shooter on any of their campuses. By noon, the lockdown had been lifted.

PALESTINE SCHOOL HAS BUS TROUBLE
A separate incident was a frightening experience for school children on a Palestine Independent School District bus.

At the bus stop at the Timbercrest Apartments complex, two students were arguing, so first-year bus driver, Sam Butler, took them to different areas of the bus to separate them. As he was doing this, he heard kids screaming and turned to see a man on the bus attempting to drive away.

The man was pushing on the accelerator, but the bus was in park and did not go anywhere. The bus driver forward from the back of the bus and grabbed the man around the neck and began trying to pull him out of the seat.

Several onlookers were watching and they ran to help and they finally got the man off the bus and someone sat on him until police arrived.

JOHNNY FOOTBALL WINS AP HONOR
On Tuesday, Tyler native Johnny Manziel picked up another major award for his spectacular debut season. He was voted The Associated Press Player of the Year.

As with the Heisman Trophy and Davey O'Brien Award that Manziel already won, the quarterback nicknamed Johnny Football is the first freshman to collect the AP award.

COWBOYS' BOND LOWERED
State District Judge Fred Tinsley lowered Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent's bond from $500,000 to $100,000 on Tuesday. He ordered Brent not to drink alcohol or drive without a valid driver's license.

Prosecutors say Brent was driving with a suspended license on the night of the Dec. 8 crash that killed friend and Cowboys practice squad member Jerry Brown.

Brent will be required to wear a monitor to detect if he has had anything to drink.

POWERBALL WINNERS PUT SCHOOL IN THE PINK
And, in out of state football news, the Iowa couple who won a $202 million Powerball jackpot in September is donating $3 million to their son's high school for a new football stadium — but the gift comes with a catch.

The facility visitor's locker must be painted pink.
