Kissam fifth-graders earning free computers
For the second consecutive year, Chapel Hill ISD's Kissam Intermediate School has partnered with Mustard Seed Ministries to provide fifth-graders the opportunity to earn a free computer.
This year, 191 students took the challenge, and with the help of their teachers, parents, and their own work, received a free computer, according to information from Kissam Intermediate.
To receive the computer, each student had to write an essay about why their family needed a computer and complete 10 community service hours.
The fifth-grade teachers and parents partnered with the students to make sure they had community service opportunities, according to the news release.
Students worked after school on campus improvement projects and on Saturdays in Adopt-A-Highway roadside cleanup.
They received the computers on Thursday. Each one came complete with keyboard, mouse, speakers, cables, monitor and several pre-loaded software programs.
The Computers for Kids program, led by the Rev. Karen Jones of Mustard Seed Ministries, refurbishes donated computers for the program, according to the news release.
