For the second time in less than five months the the Historic Aviation Memorial Museum family in Tyler is mourning the loss of a member killed in a plane crash.

Carolyn Verver, the president and media coordinator, said she received word two hours after the crash on Thursday that Carroll Noell Rather, 77, was killed when his Delfin L-29 crashed in Kaufman County about 11:15 a.m.

Mrs. Verver said Rather was giving Lee Fisher Floyd, 30, of Dallas, a ride after the man won a bid for a ride at an auction.

“Noell was a very charity-driven man and he would offer rides in the L-29 to charity events to be auctioned off. He was giving Mr. Floyd a ride yesterday because he won the bid at the last event,” she said.

“We are just devastated because in less than a few months we have lost two of our members in plane crashes,” she said.

Glenn Smith, 59, of Frisco, died in September when his L-39 Albatross military jet trainer veered out of a mid- air maneuver during the Quad-City Air Show in Mount Joy, Iowa, and crashed into a field.

Tyler Paper will bring additional details as they become available.
