Hot chocolate, Santa Claus and parade floats will be part of holiday festivities tonight in Troup.

The city's Christmas parade is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Entries will line up at the intersection of Carolina and Duval streets, continue on Duval Street and turn onto Front Street.

Carol Whitsell, wife of Troup Chamber of Commerce executive director Gene Whitsell, said there are more entries this year, likely because the parade is later than other area Christmas parades, and some people already have floats ready.

As of Wednesday, an estimated 17 or 18 floats were slated to participate, and with the addition of vehicles and people on foot, there are about 50 participants overall, Mrs. Whitsell said.

In conjunction with the parade, there will be a chamber-sponsored contest for best float, best decorated home and best decorated business, she said. Winners will be announced tonight.

Float prizes are $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place. Prizes for the best decorated home is $75 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third. Mrs. Whitsell said businesses that win receive advertising.

"We have a lot of people, they describe their float, but we don't know what to expect or the uniqueness," she said, adding that one unique participant is a horse and buggy.

After the parade, attendees can enjoy hot chocolate in the Cameron-J. Jarvis Troup Municipal Library parking lot. Santa also will be on hand to talk with children, and goodies will be given out.

"I think the weather's supposed to be good, so we hope everyone will come and enjoy the parade (and other activities)," Mrs. Whitsell said.
