Literacy Council honors 8 volunteers

The Literacy Council of Tyler recognized eight volunteers from The University of Texas at Tyler for their service.
In January, UT Tyler began a partnership with the Literacy Council of Tyler, according to a university news release.
The internship program gives UT Tyler undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to work as Literacy Council interns through the America Reads and Counts Program, according to the news release.
Students provide tutoring and other learning services to Literacy Council clientele.
DeAnn Sutton, Literacy Council's coordinator of volunteers, said the internship program is invaluable to the organization.
"It is a stunning success and a win-win situation, Ms. Sutton said, according to the news release. "We greatly appreciate the partnership."
This year's fall interns and their hometowns were: Traci Willingham, Athens; Miles Nye, Austin; Kimbria Burton, Little Elm; Alexis Poole, Palestine; Mason Berry, Huma Maqsood and Madiha Maqsood, Tyler; and Megan White, Virginia.
These students participated in the America Reads and Counts Program, which is supported by federal work-study funds, according to the news release.
This semester, the interns volunteered more than 9,000 hours serving Literacy Council students, according to the news release.
The Literacy Council of Tyler began in 1990 as an adult basic literacy program and offers basic education, GED and English as a Second Language classes.
Last year, it provided educational services to more than 2,300 students with a staff of 44 and nearly 400 volunteers, according to the news release.
