TYLER POLICE INVESTIGATE ATTEMPTED ATM BURGLARY
Tyler police are investigating the attempted burglary of an ATM overnight at Texas Bank and Trust on Grande.
Police said two men stole a van from a restaurant, drove to the bank, wrapped a chain around the ATM and attempted to pull it out of the ground using the stolen van.
However, in the process the bungling would-be thieves set off an alarm and abandoned their attempt.

TYLER CITY MANAGER GETS A RAISE
Tyler City Manager Mark McDaniel received a pay raise this morning from city council.
He had previously made a $178,500 annual salary, along with an additional $10,000 per year performance bonus, which brought his total salary to $188,500. He will now make $195,000, including the performance bonus.

HERMANNS WINS UT-TYLER AWARD
Dr. Melinda Hermanns, assistant professor of nursing at The University of Texas at Tyler, is a recipient of the 2012 President's Volunteer Service Award, as announced by the university this morning.
A previous recipient, she was recognized this year for 172 voluntary service hours on behalf of Parkinson's disease advocacy, research and education.
The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation was established in 2003 to recognize contributions made by volunteers to their communities and to encourage more people to serve.

UNCLAIMED BIKES BECOME CHRISTMAS PRESENTS
Nine bicycles which were recovered by the Smith County Sheriff's Department (but never claimed) were donated this week to the Azleway Boys Ranch in Tyler.
Smith County Commissioners Court members said they were pleased that the bikes will once again bring joy to children.
Azleway Ranch assists more than 1,000 Texas children who are at-risk and in crisis by providing a home, school, and treatment opportunities with intervention and prevention strategies for the children and their families.
