The St. Gregory Cathedral School community collected more than 14,000 food items in November to donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Outreach Center.

In a separate but related project, each third- through fifth-grade class received $100 to spend for a consumer unit in shopping and saving to go along with the school collection.

School Principal Kathy Shieldes Harry said she and other St. Gregory educators always are looking for ways to make whatever endeavor they do as educational as possible.

“It’s a huge service project for us,” she said of the food drive. “The thought crossed my mind of trying to tie it in to an academic unit.”

The academic emphasis was on being a good consumer. Classes focused on different ways to save with some emphasizing coupons, others sales and others bulk purchasing, Mrs. Harry said.

“It was interesting the different perspectives that the (classes) took trying to find what was the best way to spend that money,” she said.

The money for the project was donated and Mrs. Harry said it was meaningful for students to actually see that money when she passed out $100 bills to each class.

The classes used the money to purchase nutritional and non-perishable food items for the food drive. The goal was to see how much food they could purchase with the money.

After the project was completed, Mrs. Harry returned to each of the classes to find out what approach they took. About 150 students participated.

“I think it was a valuable experience all the way around,” she said.
