Mid-day Update: Simpson to seek Speaker post; JT two away from title

SIMPSON SEEKS SPEAKER OF HOUSE
Tea party-backed state Representative David Simpson of Longview says he's running for Texas House speaker while another conservative favorite, state Rep. Bryan Hughes of Mineola, is abandoning his bid for the post. Simpson, a second-term Republican, announced today he had been urged to run and decided to do so "after much prayer, consideration and counsel." Joe Straus of San Antonio has been speaker since 2009, but has been criticized by the far-right for being too moderate. Read Adam Russell's full story here at TylerPaper.com.

WHITEHOUSE STANDOUT MIGHT NOT GO TO TECH
Three-star wide receiver Dylan Cantrell of Whitehouse High School wasn't a big fan of Saturday's news that Tommy Tuberville decided to leave Texas Tech for Cincinnati. Cantrell, who has committed to play at Texas Tech after graduation from Whitehouse, told ESPN he will monitor what happens to the rest of the Red Raiders' coaching staff before he makes a final decision to stick with Texas Tech or not.

LIONS TWO AWAY FROM TITLE
Speaking of high school football, how about those John Tyler Lions! They are two wins away from a state championship, and our Kevin Hampton had the shutter on his FocusInOn.Me camera whirring Friday night. He posted almost 500 photos of the JT game against Frisco Centennial, and they are all available for purchase! Just go to TylerPaper.com and look for the FocusInOn.Me link in the upper right hand corner of the page.
