UPDATE: Fire Destroys Trailer Home, Damages Nearby Home
Staff Reports

A fire at an abandoned trailer home off U.S. Highway 271 North destroyed the home and melted the siding off a nearby house.

Fire crews responded to the 3800 block of Lakeland Drive after a call at about 8 p.m. When they arrived, the structure was fully involved in fire, and the trailer already had collapsed, said Rick Parker, assistant fire chief for Winona Volunteer Fire Department.

Parker said the trailer house was abandoned with no electricity and no gas, and no one lived there. The fire melted the siding on the house next to it and melted the electricity meter to that home, he said. TXU was called to repair the electricity to that home.

Dispatchers with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Red Springs, Winona and Jackson Heights volunteer departments responded to the scene.

There was no word on the cause of the fire. The fire marshal was on the scene and investigating.
