New Tylerite thankful for supportive community
ROSES: For the Rose Capitol! Thanks so much Tyler for your ecumenical and outgoing support of the Catholic Community during the recent ordination of our new bishop, Joseph Strickland. The Tyler Paper's coverage was well-researched, scholarly and in-depth. The insert magazine and its plethora of good wishes was not only a warm tribute to our beloved “Father Joe,” but a testimony to the spirit of harmony so abundantly present in Tyler.

Although new to Tyler, it seems to me the city beats with a charitable heart, and a giving concern, and I am delighted to be part of it.

CONGRATS TO BELLES
ROSES: Congrats to Robert E. Lee High School Southern Belles and Sara Nash.

I had the distinct pleasure on Thanksgiving Day to view the REL Southern Belles performance in the McDonalds Thanksgiving Day parade in Chicago. The Southern Belles, led by Director Sara Nash, Assistant Director Christina Snider, and Southern Belle Captain Kelsey Wylie, represented Tyler, Texas and REL High School in true Texas fashion. It was an absolutely flawless performance by this professional and talented group of young women. This event was televised nationally on WGN TV. I have never been more proud to live in Tyler, Texas as on this past Thanksgiving Day. Well done to Sara Nash for leading this group of young women and representing Tyler and REL High School with their outstanding performance.

THIEVES AT WORK
RANT: I moved to Tyler about a year ago. I live in a great neighborhood. No noisy neighbors or crazy drivers. I was happy and excited to order college graduation announcements for my oldest son, graduating in December. They were delivered on a Saturday by FedEx — and on Sunday they were gone.

I don't know why we can't have the security of having a package delivered and dropped off literally inches from my front door. I am beside myself. My son is graduating soon and now I have to reorder everything.

The thieves must have been very disappointed to see a box of announcements. Please return them. No questions asked.

UNNECESSARY SHOTS
RANT: Rabies shots every three years was passed into law by the state of Texas several years ago. It is not necessary to give them every year, especially to small dogs who are old and mostly house dogs. It is a danger to their health and longevity by not giving these elderly dogs the rabies shots. Veterinarians are forsaking the well-being of their patients so they can receive the extra money. They know, and have known for years, that after a certain age, there is no reason for shots, and should be ashamed to administer them to elderly dogs. Wake up those who are elected to serve our citizens. Go where more than 90 percent of Texas counties have gone — to rabies shots every three years.

GREAT WORK
ROSES: To city of Tyler Solid Waste employees Calvin and Adrian who pick up our trash in Southeast Tyler. We had an exceptional amount of limbs fall from our pecan trees this year and they did an excellent job of picking them up along with our other trash. We always seemed to have some limbs every Tuesday and Friday. We know they probably dreaded coming to our house. However, they always do a good job any time of the year. We just want to let them know how much we appreciate them and thank them for the job they do.

PARKING PROBLEMS
RANT: I am a small business owner of 10 years and seven of those years have been in Tyler at 6722 S. Broadway. I share a parking lot with four other businesses, one being the U.S. Postal Service. My business is a furniture consignment store, therefore we need parking for our customers. Additionally, my monthly rent is nearly the same as the post office rent. There are 79 parking spots. My only interest is in the seven in front of the building that I lease. Any customer of the five businesses can park there. I and most of my employees do not park in the parking lot but in a vacant dirt lot.

I have for more than seven years asked post office officials to not have their employees or their postal trucks take those seven customer parking spots. At one time, I had a postal supervisor tell me they had no customers. At that time, postal customers picked up their mail at this location. I reminded the supervisor that he did have customers. That supervisor was parking in front of the post office.

A year ago, I ask the landlord to post “customers only” parking signs — which I offered to pay to have installed. The landlord had the signs installed (he paid) but the problem continues. As a small business owner and a private citizen, I am mystified as to why the post office can't live by a simple business practice: Customers come first.

CHRISTMAS MEMORIES
REMEMBRANCE: Chr-istmas 1963 at my parents’ home in Blackwell, Okla., is my favorite memory.

My sisters and our families did not realize at that time that it would be our last Christmas with our daddy. Their home was filled with so much love, fun and Christmas spirit; it was overwhelming. The tree was up, and lights were shining bright outside on the 12 inches of new snow.

Christmas Eve day was spent outside with everyone romping and playing in the snow with lots of snowball fights. Our husbands built the biggest, jolliest snowman I had ever seen. (I am from the Panhandle of Texas, so I had seen lots of snowfall during the Christmas holidays.)

Christmas Day, we all joined hands around the dinner table, and our daddy said a most inspiring prayer. I remember the tears ran down our cheeks and his. It was like Christmas Day was filled with everyone sharing memories and good times that we had together in the past with our mother and daddy.

I really believe my daddy knew it would be his last Christmas with his family. He passed away one month later. It is a Christmas I remember at this time every year.
