Tanks and armored personnel carriers rolled into the shattered district near the Egyptian presidential palace Thursday after days of protests there targeting President Mohamed Morsy.
The military unit charged with protecting Egypt's capital said it would clear the area surrounding the palace Thursday afternoon ahead of a planned presidential address. Morsy supporters fled, leaving only a small crowd of anti-Morsy protesters in the area, which resembled a war zone Thursday after repeated clashes between the two camps. Five people have been killed and 446 injured in clashes between pro- and anti-Morsy demonstrators outside the palace, according to the Egyptian health ministry.
