Henderson ISD to host open forum on vacant property use
Henderson ISD is giving the public a chance to weigh in on the future use of property housing Montgomery Elementary School.
For several decades, the school acted as a district campus, but when Wylie Elementary School opened, older buildings were left vacant, Stacey Sullivan, director of human resources/communications, said.
Then in 2009, the school board approved a facilities plan, which is being carried out now, she said. Montgomery, on West Collins Street, will be demolished, except for the gymnasium and a classroom wing.
“It was built in late 80s early 90s, so it's in good shape,” Ms. Sullivan said. “The rest of campus is old and not suitable for educational purposes due to foundational (issues) as well as classroom size. The building's way too small.”
Although much of the school will be demolished, the district is retaining the property and will ensure that it looks nice, Ms. Sullivan said.

Little league groups will still be able to practice on site.
Still, Ms. Sullivan said Henderson ISD wants to give community members an opportunity to voice opinions about the future use of the property.
A public meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at Montgomery.
Ms. Sullivan said anyone who wants to give input on what should be done with the property after Montgomery is demolished is welcome.
