Primary school tackles bullying with week of lessons
Staff Reports

About 350 Mineola primary students held up signs, chanted and marched around their campus to protest bullying recently.

Primary school counselor Melanie Kolbye said the campus spent a week on a bullying unit, with daily anti-bullying announcements, color sheets, videos and school lessons with the subject tied in.

Ms. Kolbye said after a week of discussions, the students participated in a "No bullies here" parade on Nov. 19. Two middle school cheerleaders led the kindergarten, first- and second-graders with chants.

Members of the middle and high school bands played while students marched around carrying anti-bullying signs, played with noise-makers and chanted "No bullies allowed" and "No more bullies."

"Hopefully, this will be a learning experience and message they remember," Ms. Kolbye said.
